About the Lung Association
The Lung Association is a registered charity that funds respiratory research, promotes better management of asthma, helps those with chronic lung disease, promotes a tobacco-free society and addresses the effects of air quality on lung health. The Lung association promotes and supports medical research to find ways to treat and prevent lung disease.One in five Canadians suffers with a breathing problem and in the Kingston & Thousand Islands Area that is more than 60,000 people. The Lung Association focuses on asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and air quality.
The Asthma Action Program offers a Help Line at 1-800-668-7682 staffed by Certified Asthma Educators offering advice and a variety of printed materials geared to help people manage their asthma. In Ontario one million people suffer with asthma and in the Kingston & Thousand Islands area more than 17,500 individuals experience asthma.
BREATHWORKS is a comprehensive national program to support people living with COPD. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and chronic airway obstruction. It is a lung disease that affects close to 3% of the Canadian population, more than 5,200 people in the Kingston area, and it accounts for 5% of all deaths in Canada.
