Cost: Adult: $22
Description: Canadian conductor-composer-educator, Brian Tate, in his first appearance in Ontario, conducts three choirs - 170 voices - together, onstage at The Isabel in Kingston, Saturday 8 June, 7:30pm, for one show only. The concert, Raise the Roof, features the combined voices of Open Voices Community Choir (Andy Rush, Director), She Sings! Womens Choir (Martha Hill Duncan, Director), and The Kingston Youth Choir (Emily McPherson, Director). Brian Tates concert is sponsored by The Ballytobin Foundation, supporting Arts and Culture in Kingston. Tickets and information: $22 from The Isabel Box Office, 390 King St. West, Kingston, M-F 12:30-4:30 pm, 613-533-2424 and online ibcpaboxoffice@queensu.ca Because Kingston is well-known as a choir city, Mr. Tate will also lead four public workshops and vocal clinics in the days leading up to the show. My focus is primarily on singers finding their authentic voice, and making each song uniquely their own, Tate explains. Whether amateur, professional, teacher, student, composer, conductor or simply a lover of choral music, workshop participants in Brian Tate's four public workshops will improve their performance, their appreciation of choral concerts, and will experience choir master classes with a celebrated Canadian conductor-composer-educator. The workshops are an opportunity to take home some of Mr. Tates award-winning musical scores. Tickets and information: $10 and $15 directly from Open Voices Community Choir, www/openvoices.ca I just love working with people, says Tate. Im passionate about the Arts. You can see how music has a fundamental role in everything - learning, communication, understanding, community, health and wholeness. Brian Tate composes big complicated pieces for choirs and he conducts many of them, directing choirs all over the world. He is a choir clinician, working with singers and choirs to improve vocal and ensemble technique. He is also a renowned vocal educator in the use of the voice for personal development. The compositions feature up to eight parts, with looping and counterpoint, big sound, and delicate weavings. He is known for his disciplined approach and sheer inspiration (-Gerry Van Wyck, Head of Choral Studies, Vancouver Community College), he also becomes the music, in a way that is positively contagious (-Bruce Sanguin, author).
